EL PASO, Texas — A Texas pet groomer was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after allegedly "roughly" and "aggressively" grooming a puppy, causing its death.

Last week, the El Paso Police Department's Animal Cruelty Unit began investigating the death of a 16-week-old Shi-Poo puppy, Luccas, who had died shortly after returning home from a grooming appointment at Happy Paws Dog Grooming in the 12000 block of Edgemere Boulevard.

"...evidence was found to indicate Luccas was handled roughly during his grooming, grabbed forcefully by the neck, and went limp as 31–year-old Leobardo Nava continued to aggressively groom him," read a statement, in part, from the El Paso Police Department.

"Luccas demonstrated signs of pain and lethargy upon being picked up. He was unable to eat or drink and cried out in pain when he attempted to walk," stated the department. "Luccas expired a short time after returning home with his owner."

A veterinarian examined Luccas and conducted a necropsy — finding Luccas' lungs were full of blood, an indication he died of a pulmonary edema caused by the stress of the incident, according to police.

Nava was arrested on Friday, July 10, 2020, and charged with one count of cruelty to animals, possession of marijuana, and outstanding traffic warrants. his total bonds were set at $3,312.20.
