Midland-five

MIDLAND, Texas — Five teens are behind bars on various charges in connection with the death of missing Midland teen, 17-year-old Robert Duncan, in what investigators described as a drug deal gone bad.

Duncan was last seen Friday night, December 27, 2019, and initially believed to have been missing. He was later discovered deceased at a trailer park, in the area of County Road 1230 and County Road 120, in Midland County on Tuesday, December, 31, 2019.

During the investigation, the Midland County Sheriff's Office says three search warrants were obtained and executed, ultimately leading to the arrest of the five Midland teens.

18-year-old Zayden L. Hayes was arrested and charged with capital murder and is being held in the Midland County Jail on a $1.5 million bond. He is additionally being held on a probation violation and a charge for possession of marijuana, with $100,000 bonds each.

17-year-old Larry A. West was also charged with capital murder and is also being held on a $1.5 million bond. 18-year-old Rogelio I. Cadena was charged with murder and is being held on a $1.5 million bond.

18-year-old Rogelio Vasquez was charged with tampering with evidence and 17-year-old John Hayes was charges with interfering with public duties.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Zayden Hayes, West, and Cadena were to meet with Duncan to purchase marijuana — instead, they had planned to rip him off and steal the drugs. As West fled with the drugs, Duncan gave chase and was confronted by Hayes who had been given a gun by Cadena — Duncan was  shot to death during the incident.
