EL PASO, Texas — The aunt of a child who suffered brain damage, a collapsed lung, and a lacerated liver has been arrested and charged with injury to a child, the El Paso Police Department announced last week.
Police say the child remains in critical condition and is "clinging to life."
The incident occurred on May 22, 2021, in the 8800 block of Bob Kennedy Way. There, the El Paso Fire Department had responded to reports of an unconscious child.
The 4-year-old male child was found with what police described as multiple life-threatening injuries — including a brain injury, a collapsed lung, and a lacerated liver.
"Detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit began their investigation which led to the arrest of the child’s aunt, 31–year-old Jessica Nuñez, who was acting as a caregiver for the child and his 5–year-old sister," read a statement from the El Paso Police Department last week after charges were filed in the case.
The 5-year-old female victim suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Nunez was charged with two counts of injury to a child and booked into the El Paso County Detention Center where she is being held on bonds totaling $1,005,000.
