LAREDO, Texas — Border Patrol agents discovered nearly 500 pounds of marijuana concealed in a hidden compartment during a traffic stop yesterday afternoon.

The Border Patrol agents, who were assigned to the Freer, Texas, station, performed a traffic stop in the early afternoon on May 11, 2020, on a Ford F-150 hauling a trailer on State Highway 16, just south of Freer.

The trailer appeared to be loaded with a stack of plywood, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection but, after a service canine alerted agents to the trailer, a hidden compartment cut into the center of the stack of plywood was discovered.

Inside, agents discovered 30 bundles of marijuana which weighed 485.21 pounds. CBP estimates the street value of the seizure at $388,168.

The case was turned over to the Duval County Sheriff's Office for prosecution.
