LUBBOCK, Texas — An eight-year-old Lubbock child was killed in a two-vehicle crash early Thursday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash occurred on Tuesday, January 2, 2020, at approximately 8:30 a.m., on Farm-to-Market (FM) 41 east of mile marker 298 near Ropesville, Texas, and southwest of Lubbock.

A 2017 Ford pickup truck was traveling west on FM 41, approaching the rear of an semi-truck tractor and trailer that was stopped on FM 41, facing west, with its hazard lights activated, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Johnny Bures, citing preliminary crash investigation.

The driver of the semi-truck tractor and trailer had become lost and was stopped to find directions.

The driver of the Ford pickup, identified by police as 35-year-old Rhett Green of Lubbock, Texas, did not realize the 18-wheeler was stopped, attempted to veer to the left to avoid striking the rear of the semi-trailer, but was unable to avoid the collision — the front right side collided with the rear of the trailer.

An eight-year-old child, a male of Lubbock and a passenger in the Ford pickup truck, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lubbock County Medical Examiner's Office. Green was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, identified by police as 55-year-old Kelly Ray De Luca of Deltona, Florida, was uninjured.

Green, according to the City of Meadow, Texas, was a volunteer firefighter with their fire department.
