GARLAND, Texas — Two people were shot, one killed, in a gas station disturbance in north Texas on Thursday afternoon.
Now, a 15-year-old is jailed on a murder charged and an 18-year-old for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Around 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, January 14, 2021, the Garland Police Department responded to a report of several subjects fighting in a gas station parking lot in the 1800 block of West Kingsley Road. There, witnesses told police the individuals began shooting at each other and then fled the location in two separate vehicles.
Shortly after the initial call-out, police received another call from a business in the 1900 block of South First Street. There, two males arrived at the location in an SUV, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police say one unidentified male in the SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene and 18-year-old Jairo Sait Saavedra was transported to an area hospital.
Meanwhile, a 15-year-old juvenile checked into a Dallas-area hospital. Detectives learned the 15-year-old was involved in the shooting.
"Investigators recovered video surveillance showing several subjects meeting at the gas station for unknown reasons," read a statement from the Garland Police Department. "While at the location, the individuals began to fight; the 15-year-old and Saavedra retrieved handguns and exchanged gunfire."
"Detectives do not believe the individuals acted in self-defense," continued the statement.
Police believe the 15-year-old, who will not be identified due to their age, shot both Saavedra and second unidentified male from the SUV.
Both Saavedra and the 15-year-old were released from their respective hospitals yesterday. Saavedra was booked into the Garland Detention Center and was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and the 15-year-old was booked into the Garland Juvenile Detention Center and charged with murder.
Police say one handgun was recovered and the investigation remains ongoing.
