DALLAS, Texas — The State Fair of Texas has opened its first round of auditions seeking the next voice of Big Tex.

"Do you think you have the perfect voice to fit our Texas-sized cowboy?" stated the State Fair of Texas on Wednesday morning. "We know, it’s a tall task, 55-foot tall to be exact, but if you’re up for the challenge, head to for more information on the audition process and opportunity of a lifetime"

The State Fair of Texas has some big boots to fill after the passing of the previous voice of Big Tex — Robert "Bob" Boykin — earlier this year. Boykin had greeted guests at the State Fair of Texas as Big Tex for the past seven years and was a highly-accomplished man in his own right.

The first round of auditions began today, April 1, and the State Fair of Texas will be accepting applicants until April 15.

Applicants will read and record pre-written scripts as part of their initial application process before in-person interviews, in-studio recording, and an eventual PA system test.

A new Big Tex voice is expected to be chosen by July in time for the scheduled fair between September 25 and October 18.
