DENTON, Texas — A Tarrant County Sheriff's Office deputy was arrested and charged with murder and tampering with evidence in connection with his girlfriend's death.

After a nearly three-week investigation, Denton Police Department detectives obtained arrest warrants for 36-year-old Jay Allen Rotter in connection with the death of his girlfriend, 46-year-old Leslie Lynn Hartman.

On August 26, 2020, at approximately 11:34 p.m., the Denton Police Department responded to a residence in the 2400 block of Robinwood Lane. There, Rotter told police Hartman, who was found deceased inside the residence, had shot herself.

"As the investigation continued into September, detectives executed search warrants and analyzed physical evidence," read a statement from the Denton Police Department. "Detectives presented a probable cause affidavit to a judge, who determined probable cause existed and signed an affidavit for Rotter’s arrest."

Earlier today, detectives arrested Rotter on the warrants for murder and tampering with evidence. He was booked into the Denton County Jail where his bonds were set by a magistrate at $1 million and $150,000, respectively.

Rotter, according to the Denton Police Department, is a deputy with the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office.
