DALLAS, Texas — A Plano Police Department officer shot an armed man at a crash scene in south Dallas on Thursday morning.
At approximately 7:15 a.m., on Thursday, May 21, 2020, a plain-clothed Plano police officer was driving by a motor vehicle crash near the intersection of Bonnie View Road and Tioga Street when he observed a male, who was involved in the crash, exit his vehicle and retrieve a long rifle from the backseat of his vehicle, according to the Dallas Police Department which is investigating the crash and shooting.
"Out of concern, the Plano officer stopped his vehicle and exited," stated the department.
A witness at the scene told police the Plano officer confronted the man with the rifle, identified himself as a police officer, and gave verbal commands to stop.
"The individual continued to walk away and at some point turned and pointed his rifle towards the officer," stated the Dallas Police Department.
The Plano police officer shot at the armed man — striking him once in the arm. The armed man then fled the scene and was subsequently located in the backyard of a nearby residence.
The man was transported to an area hospital with what police described as non-life threatening injuries.
"Since this incident occurred in the city of Dallas, it will be investigated by the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit," stated the department.
A portion of Bonnie View Road remains closed due to the ongoing investigation.
