FORT WORTH, Texas — A one-year-old child was killed during a carjacking outside of a north Texas hospital on Sunday.
The alleged suspect in the carjacking, identified by police as 30-year-old Nico Lorenzo De La Fuente, was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and capital murder of a child. He is being held at the Tarrant County Jail on bonds totaling $600,000.
Sunday afternoon, police say the child's parents had met near the Texas Health Huguley Hospital, located in the 11800 block of Interstate 35, to exchange the child, from one parent to the other, when De La Fuente attempted to steal the vehicle the child's mother had driven to the location.
The child's father jumped into the vehicle and attempted to stop the carjacking when a struggle ensued, according to police.
Police say De La Fuente then quickly backed out of the parking space and struck the mother who was holding the child. Both the mother and the child fell to the ground and, as De La Fuente attempted to flee the scene, he again struck the mother and child.
De La Fuente, according to police, drove a short distance, struck a tree, and attempted to flee on foot before collapsing due to injuries sustained in the crash. He was subsequently taken into custody by a security guard assigned to the location.
As of early Monday morning, De La Fuente remained hospitalized and was awaiting transport to the Tarrant County Jail.
