FORT WORTH, Texas — A Fort Worth Police Department officer was hospitalized after being struck by an alleged intoxicated driver while working the scene of a prior crash early Friday morning.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., on Friday, November 8, 2019, the Fort Worth police officer was working the crash scene on the northbound service road of 8800 Northwest Highway 287.
An alleged intoxicated driver, identified by police as 32-year-old Oscar Barragan, struck the officer and the officer's vehicle, veered off the road, and fled the scene on foot. He was apprehended a short time later.
Barragan was charged with intoxication assault causes serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony. He was treated at the scene prior to his booking into the Tarrant County Jail.
The officer was transported to an area hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, according to the Fort Worth Police Department. The department has not identified the officer but said she has been commissioned with the department as a police officer since December 2016.
"This incident reinforces the serious consequences of driving under the influence," stated the Fort Worth Police Department. "Designated drivers and ride share programs are available options for drivers who are under the influence, or have had too much to drink."
