HOUSTON, Texas — A would-be robber was shot in the face with his own gun while attempting to rob a fireworks stand in the Houston area.

Just after 4 p.m., police say the unidentified adult male approached a fireworks stand in the 14400 block of North Freeway, in the north Houston area, produced a revolver, and demanded cash.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Eddy Hazel says the fireworks stand employees cooperated and gave the man money. It was at that point, Hazel says, investigators believe the man set the revolver on the counter to grab the money when one of the employees grabbed the revolver and shot the man once in the face.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital where police say his last known condition was very critical.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating.
