SEMINOLE, Texas — A West Texas deputy was stabbed Monday morning by a man wanted for murder in the stabbing of a Tennessee couple, according to Texas Department of Public Safety which is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

At approximately 7:20 a.m., on Monday, June 24, 2019, a Gaines County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to reports of a suspicious person and vehicle at 1350 U.S. Highway 62-180 in Seminole, Texas.

"Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the suspect and sole occupant of a gray Toyota Camary," stated Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Sergeant Oscar Villarreal. "When asked for identification, the suspect stabbed the deputy."

The suspect has since been identified by police as 34-year-old Peter Alexander Bohning of Kent, Connecticut, who was wanted for murder and attempted murder for stabbing a couple in Nashville, Tennessee.

"The deputy defended himself by firing at the suspect with his sidearm," stated Villarreal.

The deputy, who has not been identified, was flown to a Lubbock-area hospital where he is currently in stable condition.

Bohning was transported to Seminole Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by an emergency room doctor.

According to the Nashville Police Department, Bohning approached 59-year-old Donald Zirkle and 58-year-old Leigh Ann Zirkle as they sat on their back porch in Nashville, Tennessee, asked for directions, and then attacked and stabbed them. Donald died as a result of his injuries on Friday and Leigh Ann remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Bohning's sedan was found parked on the street at the side of the Zirkles' residence with its rear doors open and porlice reported the Zirkles' Toyota Camry was gone — likely being driven by Bohning.

Detectives learned Friday night that Bohning's family in Connecticut had not heard from him in several days and have not found a connection between Bohning and the Zirkles.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
