TYLER, Texas — UDPATE [May 5] — The Smith County Sheriff's Office has identified the motorcyclist who was shot and killed on Saturday as 33-year-old Brandon Edwards of Ben Wheeler, Texas.

Police say Edwards was traveling eastbound on FM 850 in the 16400 block in the Chapel Hill area when he sustained at least one gunshot wound, causing him to crash his motorcycle onto the side of the road.

A homicide investigation remains active and ongoing, according to the Smith County Sheriff's Office.

ORIGINAL [May 3] — Smith County Sheriff's Office deputies responding to a possible motorcycle crash discovered the motorcyclist dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

At approximately 4:50 p.m., on Saturday May 2, 2020, the Smith County Sheriff's Office received a report of a possible motorcycle crash in the 16400 block of Farm-to-Market (FM) 850 in the Chapel Hill area of Smith County, just east of Tyler, Texas.

"Upon arrival it was determined that the rider of the motorcycle had been shot and was deceased at this location," read a statement from the Smith County Sheriff's Office. "Deputies immediately secured the crime scene and began gathering information."

Smith County Sheriff's Office investigators and a Crime Scene Unit responded to the location to investigate.

The motorcyclist, whose identity was being withheld pending next of kin notification, was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy was ordered by Smith County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Andy Dunklin.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to police.
