LUFKIN, Texas — Police in Lufkin, Texas, believe they have identified a woman in a now-viral video who licked Blue Bell ice cream and returned it to a Walmart freezer.

In the June 28, 2019, Twitter video, viewed at the time of press over 11.3 million times, the woman is seen opening a container of "Tin Roof" Blue Bell ice cream, licking the top of the ice cream, replacing the lid, and returning the carton of ice cream to the freezer.

Following tips to law enforcement, the investigation first turned to San Antonio and Houston where police investigated area Walmart stores to determine if there was a similar freezer section to that of the one in the video. Police were unable to successfully match a display case.

Earlier this morning, Blue Bell officials instructed their division managers to view the video in an attempt to identify the store. Within an hour, a Lufkin division manager identified the store as the Lufkin Walmart based on the store's unique merchandising.

"At 1:10 p.m. today, Blue Bell contacted us, saying that they believed the viral video took place in the Lufkin Walmart store and that they had retrieved what they believed to be the tainted container of ice cream," read a statement from the Lufkin Police Department.

By 4 p.m., Lufkin police say they obtained surveillance video placing a woman matching the suspect description in the Lufkin store on June 28, 2019, around 11 p.m.

"Detectives believe they have the woman identified and the investigation is ongoing," continued the statement.

Lufkin Director of Public Safety Gerald Williamson says appropriate charges will be filed in the case.

“Our biggest concern is consumer safety – in that regard we are glad to see the tainted product off the shelves,” he said.

Blue Bell has removed all half-gallons of “Tin Roof” product from the Lufkin Walmart shelves, according to police.
