TEXARKANA, Texas — An elderly woman held a man she found hiding beside her bed at gunpoint, long enough to stall him until police arrived and apprehended him in the woman's backyard.
What's more disturbing is, police say they found a kitchen knife under the woman's bed where the man was hiding.
The incident occurred in the 400 block of West 29th Street on Saturday night after police say the woman heard strange noises and awoke to the man next to her bed. She called police while she held him at gunpoint.
By the time officers arrived, the man had managed to run out of the house and was in the backyard attempting to climb an eight-foot privacy fence. A Texarkana police officer deployed a JPX pepper gun and took the man into custody.
The man, identified as Jeremy Griffin, was charged with burglary of a habitation and evading arrest. He is being held on bonds totaling $21,500 at the Bi-State Jail on those charges and an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a previous misdemeanor charge.
"Turns out that the residents knew Griffin and had let him live there some time back to get his life back on track - that is until he started having issues with drugs again," read a statement from the Texarkana Police Department. "They kicked him out then and he has apparently tried several times to get into the house since then."
"We don't know what his intentions were for having the knife, but know that he certainly did not belong in the house for any reason," continued the statement.
