AUSTIN, Texas — A pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross Interstate Highway 35 in Austin during the early morning hours of Friday, May 15, 2020, the Austin Police Department reported today.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. in the 12200 block of North Interstate Highway 35 in the southbound lanes.
Preliminary investigation indicates a 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling southbound in the middle lane of Interstate Highway 35. A pedestrian was attempting to cross from the center media to the west side of the highway when he was struck by the Grand Marquis.
The driver immediately exited, awaited police, and is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.
Life-saving measures were attempted by Austin Fire Department and Austin-Travis County EMS but the pedestrian, identified as 35-year-old D.J. Davis, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The crash is Austin's 33rd fatal traffic crash of 2020, which has resulted in 35 fatalities this year. During the same period last year, Austin recorded 30 traffic fatalities.
