AUSTIN, Texas — A man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and intoxication manslaughter last week after fatally striking a woman on a sidewalk in far northwest Austin.

The crash occurred on Thursday, May 21, 2020, at approximately 10:36 p.m. at the intersection of Pond Springs Road and the U.S. Highway 183 service road.

There, police say, citing preliminary investigation, a grey 2010 Mazda M3i was traveling northbound on the service road when it struck a 2014 GMC pickup truck sitting at a red light at the intersection. The impact pushed the pickup truck into the intersection and the Mazda continued northbound, up onto the sidewalk, struck a woman, and stopped after crashing into a nearby building.

The woman, identified by police as 30-year-old Ginger Mattox, was transported to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the GMC pickup truck was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mazda, identified by police as 27-year-old Gary Joseph Brauneis, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and intoxication manslaughter. Brauneis was booked into the Williamson County Jail where he is being held on bonds of $2,000 and $250,000, respectively.

The crash is Austin's 34th fatal crash of 2020 which have resulted in 36 fatalities. At this time last year, there were 33 traffic-related fatalities.
