BELTON, Texas — A dispute between two 16-year-old males in central Texas turned fatal shooting Thursday night, according to police.

At approximately 5:02 p.m., on Thursday, August 27, 2020, the Belton Police Department responded to a reported shooting near an outdoor basketball court in the 400 block of Smith Street. There, police officers discovered a 16-year-old male suffering from two gunshot wounds. The teen was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased.

Police say the shooting occurred after a dispute and the victim likely knew his assailant.

Following an investigation by the Belton Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, police identified a suspect and attempted a traffic stop of his vehicle in Temple, Texas, last night. The 16-year-old male suspect fled in his vehicle and was later stopped in the area of Orion Drive and East Cedar Crest Lane. The male juvenile suspect was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Bell County Juvenile Detention Center on the murder charge.

Belton police announced the juvenile suspect's arrest this morning but did not release his name due to his age. The name of the victim also had not been released, as of Friday morning, due to notification of next of kin.
